Most people don’t know that they make about as much red wine in Chassagne as they make white wine. This is an exceptional example of a village-level red wine from this storied town.
Paul makes one barrel – 25 cases – from a few rows of vines that lie along the lane separating the Batard vineyard from the “Le Montrachet” vineyard. This is as prestigious as a white wine can be. Truly among the very best!
Vides Bourses translates as “Empty Pocketbooks”. It is a small vineyard located just below the Grand Cru Batard Montrachet, along a little lane that was travelled by monks in the Middle Ages. It is here where bandits would often wait unseen, and rob the monks as they passed over the slight rise between Puligny and Chassagne. Today, the wines from this plot are among the best. The Vides Bourses is simply better than many Grand Cru wines, but at a Premier Cru price.
The Baudines vineyard is located high up on the famous slope near in the southern part of Chassagne. It typically has more mineral expression and has snappy acidity.
Literally from his back yard, an enclosed vineyard approximately 1 acre in size. It doesn’t get any more exclusive than this.
A personal favorite. The Blanchots Dessous vineyard lies surrounded by Chassagne Grand Cru and Premier Cru vineyards, and would certainly be elevated in any reclassification. Not the family’s highest classified wine, but one of their best. People really like this wine.
