La Croix Blanche translates as “the white cross”, a common vineyard sight in Burgundy. This vineyard is just behind the old train station across the street from the famous Epenots Premier Cru vineyard. Anne is one of only 3 winemakers to have access to the grapes in this vineyard. Most exclusive.
The name, Argillieres, means clay, which describes the soil in this vineyard. Clay soil begets elegance in a wine. When I first tasted this wine, I was blown away by the smoothness and elegance of this wine. Simply put, it seduced me … and I believe it will seduce you, too.
This vineyard is located just behind the Parent home in Pommard. There are only 3 growers who have access to this Premier Cru vineyard. Most exclusive.
Anne refers to this wine as “haute couture” or high fashion. If her Rugiens is an American football player, then the Epenots is like a golfer – showing greater finesse and elegance. Anne’s family is especially proud of this sought-after wine. She feels it could rate Grand Cru status.
Anne refers to her Rugiens as an “American football player” wine, exhibiting lots of body and power. Of course, the Rugiens vineyard has ferrous oxide in the soil, which not only gives the dirt a reddish tint, but also makes for a heartier wine. Anne’s in one of the best from this most famous Premier Cru vineyard.
This is Jean-Luc’s most highly classified wine. Another winemaker told me he would give his right arm for vines in the Petits Epenots vineyard. Jean-Luc is privileged to have these rows of Pinot Noir, and he does an exceptional job with this sought-after wine.
Jean-Luc’s rows in the Charmots vineyard are just above the famous Epenots vineyard. This helps contribute to the wine’s great balance between power and elegance.
More ferrous oxide turns the soil a reddish-brown tint – hence the name Rugiens. It is a Premier Cru vineyard, but Jean-Luc’s vines are from an unclassified portion with a slightly more eastern exposure.
This vineyard parcel, which translates as “Nut tree”, has been in the Joillot family for many generations. It is Jean-Luc’s favorite wine and probably represents the style of the domaine most accurately. This wine is the Joillot family history in a bottle.
